NYSC: No directive to pay Corpers ₦70k allowance yet

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management don talk say di news wey dey spread for news media say Corpers go receive ₦70,000 minimum wage na lie lie talk.

For statement wey NYSC director of Information and Public Relations Eddy Megwa sign, him yarn say make Corpers, papa and mama and members of the public should take note say government neva direct dem to raise the allowance as rumours dey suggest.

Di statement come dey explain say Corpers already know di correct channel of communication wey NYSC dey use, and dat since dem neva release such statement of increment, make corpers comot mind for allowee increase for now.

What fueled the ₦70k NYSC allowance rumour

Na for 2020 wey NYSC last increase allowances of corpers from ₦19,800 to ₦33k Dem increase am dat time because government been sign new minimum wage bill of ₦30,000 for every civil servant.

So, for July of 2024, President Bola Tinubu come sign new minimum wage bill into law afta Labour Unions pressure government to do am in order to make life a bit easy since price of goods for market increase wetin no good.

Presido signed di bill for State House wey dey Abuja days afta National Assembly been don pass di Minimum Wage Act, 2019 to increase di National Minimum Wage from ₦30k to ₦70k.

Dis development come give Corpers and many Nigerians the impression say dem go follow receive di ₦70k.

“Di signing of di minimum wage bill into law by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu na both a promise wey him keep and na demonstration of his people-centric governance model,” dis na wetin him yarn in a statement.

“Tinubu promised to pay a living wage to Nigerian workers for him election campaigns and him don keep di promise.”

Labour Unions never got what they demanded

For di beginning, Labour Unions been propose ₦494k as new minimum wage, but government come offer ₦60k. Afta series of negotiations, workers come demand ₦250k but government still put am for N62k.

But on 18 July, di Federal Government and di unions come reach agreement of ₦70k.
Dis 70k sef go pass review test every three years. So, afta dis agreement, President Tinubu immediately transmitted di bill to di National Assembly so dat dem go pass am.

Lawmakers no come waste time to pass the bill into law. Dis new minimum wage go help, but e no go too help in the long run if prices of goods still dey increase as nobody don know how e go be tomorrow.

For Corpers, dis money no go reach dem for now until government give order say make NYSC management pay Corpers the 70k minimum wage too.
